A native hornbill has been sighted quite sometime ago in Nanyang Terrace. It was also sighted in Nanyang Heights.
Yesterday it came to Nanyang View, to eat palm seeds from the palm tree outside my kitchen window. My daughter took these photos
It goes by the sound GEK GEK GEK. If you hear this, you will be treated to a delighted sight of this majestic bird. It's wing span must have been four feet. Sometimes it perches on TV aerials.
This was posted to Nanyang Connect and the Staff Digest did an interview with me.
I went to Whatipu Scientific Reserve. I didn't see any endangered birds, but I saw some White-fronted Tern (Sterna striata). They were nesting and I saw some chicks. The birds were very protective of their young and at one stage, I thought a mum was attacking me.
The commonest Tern in New Zealand, present throughout the year, although a large proportion of young birds appear to migrate to Australia. In breeding adults the bill is black, feet reddish black. Body plumage, including tail, pure white, wings pearly grey above. Young birds in first plumage have variable mottling on the shoulders and a mottled pattern of black and white on the crown behind the eye. In wintering adults the black cap recedes with the replacement by white feathers, producing the same general appearance as in the young.
YOUNG" (Children, New Things, Youthful,...)
Next Week: COLORFUL (Flowers, Butterflys, Birds, Houses, Boats,...)Thursday is a place for photographic fun and learning. A theme is announced on this site each week.
In 1978, I used to spend my lunch time during the warmer months in Albert Park. The students of Auckland University were and still are very lucky to have a beauitful park adjacent to the campus. They frequently change the flowers in the clock.
We took our wedding photos near by. So you can imagine why this is another of my favourite place of Auckland.
This park has an important history. Please click on link if you are interested.
When we took the kids back there in 2000, the hands of the clock were gone. A victim of vandalism.

I enjoyed myself and my audience had fun, listening to a talk peppered with my Quang Ning dialect which they could understand.

I lived in Nanyang Technological University for 16 years. It was communal living with expatriates from all over the world.
We also had locals, locals from the jungle which the two legged creature had encroached. Monkeys came out from their ever decreasing habitat.
My monkeys are so very funny, funnier than yours. episode 1, they chose my house to make their inaugural entrance. They came inside my house, the boss sat in my husband's dining chair, they moved to our lounge, left after eating french fries and took a canister of peanuts. The little ones just walked along the balcony banister. It was so funny to see him hold one canister with one hand, and climb the banister and back to the trees where some other monkeys were.
I was frozen afraid they would attack me. I tried to call out to the children upstairs to come down to watch.
The novelty worn off, and they became a nuisance when the not only stole fruits from the fruit bowl, they rip orchids thinking they were fruits.
Eventually the university got the pest control to trap the big boss, tranquilize him. I happened to be there to see it. With the boss gone, the rest of the monkeys retreated back to the jungle.
To my dying bed, I will remember this. They had to come to my house, media whore they were. I emailed it to the whole wide world via our NTU staff online magazine.

I had wanted to post this story,
Some one Up there had told me, "Not yet."
Each time I see a bike like this,
The car went too fast for me.
The story goes like this,
A UK nurse came to work in New Zealand.
She was killed while cycling.
Her friends put her bike where she was killed.
Yet there were callous people,
They removed the chain,
And stole the bike.
Callous, yes, that's the word.
I saw this bike,
I asked my companion," Don't go yet."
I need this photo.
Somewhere, there is a bike like this,
There is a bereaved mom.
Who is grieving for her child,
"Not yet, you are not yet ready to go to heaven."
