weekend reflection: At the beach.

It is the shortest day,
It is pitch black.
The gale is bellowing.
The rain just pelted heavily

There is no one in sight.
No, no one would go to the beach.
At Winter solstice,
No wait, there is a solo person.

Why the solitude?
Oblivious to the hideous weather elements?
On and on, she walks.
Back and forth, she leaves her footprints.

Could she be like me?
Could she have empty arms?
Has someone died?
Could she be looking in the skies?

Hoping for a glimpse of her angel?
Alas, even the sky is setting.
Making that one last glance in the sky,
A zilch.

Photohunt: Daydreaming

Photo

Day dreaming that I know the Prime Minister of New Zealand Helen Clark.

 Theme For Saturday Photo Hunting

My town in cinders.

My town in cinders.

My artist friend, Oliver Wong titled his piece of art. "

Stillness"

My Sibu town razed,

A hundred houses brought to ground.

My town in stillness,

People gasp,

How could this have happened?

My town in cinders.

Kia Kaha, Be strong,

to my people in Sibu.

You will rebuilt,

You will be strong

1928 Sibu saw a huge fire razing the few wooden shop

houses in existence then.

Bamboo leaves for Zhung making.

Duanwu Festival (Chinese: 端午節/端午节)

We ate this every year on the Lunar fifth of May, and we helped Mum wrap this difficult dumpling.

These days you can buy the tetrahedral shaped zhungzi throughout the year. My traditional Cantonese ones are rectangular shape like a pillow. My two older sisters Rose and Elizabeth can make them. Alas for me, too many decades away from home and combined with laziness, this tradition has died with me. I think I can make the tetrahedral shape of my mother in law, if I tried. They use a special kind of bamboo leaf which my mum grew in her garden. Most people buy from imported from China. The Vietnamese call this Elephant bamboo.

I took the photo of the bamboo clump when I arrived on the Gold Coast. It was the same one Mum had grown in Borneo. Here where her body lay, they also grown the bamboo which we used to make Zhungzi. We used with without having to boil them as you would have to with the imported ones. The leaves were soft and subtle. The bamboo stem is like a reed. It grows as tall as a human being.

Mellow yellow, Mobile ad

I saw this vehicle stopping on the road side with an advertising page. I wonder what the council says.

Swan culling

These swans are very popular with the visitors to Western Springs. They are the prima donnas and are favourites. The public love these swans. It is illegal to catch these birds and people can be fined if caught.

But nearer to the airport, these indigenous black swans are being shot out of the sky over the Bay of Plenty on Campbell Live Television.

The airport state that the flying swans can endanger planes quoting the accident on the Hudson river.

Thursday Challenge: Music

Today a percussion band came to school. They played a marimba similar to this.

An Abmirimba ( the largest in the Marimba family) is on loan to our school. It is made of 100% recycled timber. It is not weather proved so we have to take it in every evening. It is brightly coloured and very attractive to the young students.

The marimba is a musical instrument in the percussion family. Keys or bars (usually made of wood) are struck with mallets to produce musical tones. The keys are arranged as those of a piano, with the accidentals raised vertically and overlapping the natural keys (similar to a piano) to aid the performer both visually and physically.

The children love making music during their morning tea and lunch break. It makes a much nicer sound if you hit with beaters at the sides of the keys ( which are colour coded) and not the tops of the keys.

abc letter V for vase

Sarawak has potteries where they paint traditional dayak designs. A friend went to Sarawak and brought me one. You will see its distinctive patterns. This is one two and half inch tall.

I like this glass vase and the stock flowers.

This plant is also known as the Goddess of Mercy plant. Worshippers of Goddess of Mercy will have a vase of this plant to worship her.

I just like plants.

In Singapore, I experimented with this plant, I cut about two feet long stems of this plant, I had about twenty of them, and grew them in a vase in side my house. Soon shoots grew, and this is the result. There was no need to fertilise the plant.

As it was dengue infestation time, I had to cover the vase with netting to prevent the aedes mosquitoes from laying eggs in the still water. Dengue fever was very serious, and I as the secretary of the gardening club had to set examples of keeping our plants stagnant water free. In NTU, they regularly fogged the campus.
